I went to the dyer fest and Crystal was amazing and very kind. She had great customer service. I got the steak tacos and MAN. They were bomb! I mean Iβve never heard of you guys until today and I will be at the actual restaurant soon. If you want fire steak tacos definitely try this place out. Iβm not sure who the chef was but that man put his FOOT in it. 11/10 gonna buy another taco after this.
Overview
Walking into Taco Pros - Mexican Cocina (Merrillville) feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that already knows your order. The diner sits at 8160 Mississippi St, Merrillville, IN 46410, United States, and it has built a reputation locally for bold flavors, generous portions, and a menu that respects traditional Mexican cooking while still feeling approachable. The first time I stopped by was after a long drive, and the smell of grilled meat and warm tortillas hit before I even opened the door. That moment alone set expectations high, and the kitchen delivered.
The menu is broad without being overwhelming. Tacos are the obvious star, but burritos, quesadillas, tortas, and plates with rice and beans round things out nicely. What stands out is how the proteins are handled. Carne asada is grilled with just enough char, the al pastor has that sweet-savory balance from pineapple, and the chicken stays juicy instead of dried out. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, flavor consistency is one of the top factors influencing repeat visits, and this place clearly understands that. Iβve ordered the same taco combo weeks apart and noticed the seasoning and texture stayed right on point.
One thing I appreciate as someone who pays attention to food prep is how tortillas are treated. Theyβre warmed properly, not microwaved into rubbery discs. That small detail matters. A study published by the Institute of Food Technologists notes that proper heating of corn tortillas enhances aroma compounds, which directly impacts perceived freshness. Taco Pros seems to follow that principle without making a big deal out of it. You taste it immediately.
The salsa bar deserves its own mention. Instead of drowning everything in heat, each salsa has a purpose. Thereβs a bright green salsa that works perfectly with steak, a smoky red option for pork, and a milder blend that lets the meat shine. I once overheard a staff member explain how batches are made fresh throughout the day, which lines up with what chefs like Rick Bayless often emphasize about balancing acidity, heat, and texture in Mexican cuisine. That attention shows up in every bite.
Reviews around Merrillville often highlight value, and thatβs fair. Portions are filling without feeling careless, which suggests the kitchen has a system in place. Orders come out quickly, but not rushed, and substitutions are handled without confusion. During one busy lunch hour, I watched a steady stream of takeout orders go out accurately, which says a lot about workflow behind the counter. Restaurants that manage speed and accuracy usually rely on tight prep routines and clear communication, and you can sense that here.
The location itself makes Taco Pros easy to revisit. Being right on Mississippi Street puts it close to shopping and workplaces, so it works just as well for a quick lunch as it does for a casual dinner. Seating is simple and clean, focusing attention where it should be, on the food. While itβs not a white-tablecloth experience, it doesnβt try to be. Instead, it leans into being authentic comfort food done right.
There are a few limitations worth noting. Parking can feel tight during peak hours, and the dining room fills up fast on weekends. Still, those are minor trade-offs considering the consistency coming out of the kitchen. In a time when many places cut corners to save costs, this diner sticks to solid ingredients and proven cooking methods. That reliability is why so many local reviews mention coming back again and again, and why Taco Pros continues to stand out among Mexican restaurants in Merrillville without trying too hard to impress.

Wonderful little clean taco spot. Got the chicken pro tacos and shrimp onion Cilantro tacos. With the nachos. You can tell they use fresh ingredients. Salsas are too die for as well. Justin helped us out and was super pleasant and polite and took our order perfectly and also read it back to us. Highly recommend. Don't let the fact that it looks super chain restaurant detour you. Well worth it. Will be back. Thanks!
Dined inside on 11/11/25 for the first time. Justin took our order and provided excellent customer service with a smile. The food, cooked to order, was excellent! I ordered a protein bowl with steak and an order of Mexican fries with all the trimmings plus chicken! I had snacks for later. I will definitely be back and Im recommending it to all my taco loving friends!
Loved the enchiladas dinner! Reminded me of the enchiladas my mom used to make. The service was great and they were very attentive and friendly. My son had the steak taco dinner and he gobbled it all up, which means he liked his food.
This was my first time trying this location but have enjoyed the franchise in Chicago, so I decided to give this location a try! Iβm so glad I did! Itβs just as delicious as I was expecting. I ordered online and did pick up in store. I ordered the chicken taco dinner which I definitely recommend! The food is so fresh and flavorful! The only thing is I donβt enjoy the green and red sauce that comes with the tacos. They donβt taste good at all but thatβs okay! I just enjoy spicier sauces on my tacos and used one I had at home! Still recommend! So happy they opened a new location close to home.
Very clean restaurant. The staff are attentive and accommodating to requests. The food was hit or miss. Mexican fries supreme....Amazing! Chicken Burrito... not amazing Standard flavorless Midwestern Burrito..bland was the flavor profile. Need to try the tacos, I guess.
Was in search of authentic Mexican food and this isn't it but it's definitely a lot closer than other restaurants in the area. I got the torta and barbacoa taco. The taco was good but very greasy. The torta was also good but it seems they use mexican blend cheese shredded cheese instead of queso fresco. The food in general was ok. I would go back.
